From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Assuming that Dvenir is a copyist's error for Denvir the earliest reference I have found to the name in that form is in the Co. Monaghan Hearth Money Rolls 1663, parish of Donaghmoyne, viz Patrick Denvir of Laragh; in 1665 the taxpayer for the same holding was named MacIlmartin. Any references to the name I have met for a later date also relate to places in Ulster, but further north, chiefly Co. Down. Most Rev. Cornelius Denvir was Bishop of Down and Connor from 1835 to 1865: he was prominent in the moderate party in the controversy over Family tradition traces the Irish Denvirs back to D'Anver of Norfolk (temp. William the Conqueror) and makes the family of Sir John Denvir, the regicide, settle in Ireland at a place near Strangford, Co. Down, the United Irishman Patrick Denvir (1747-1831) being his descendant. The latter went to America in 1799.

John Denvir (1834-1916), author of Life story of an Old Rebel etc. and a notable figure among the Catholic Irish of Liverpool, was born in Co. Antrim.
