Dering Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
= Dearing, q.v.
The source of this ancient family, (whence the affix of Surenden-Dering, co. Kent,) appears to be from that of De Morinis, who probably originated in the territory of the Morini in the N.E. of France. One of the early members, Deringus de M., seems to have stamped his baptismal appellative upon his descendants as a surname in the twelfth century. See Hasted's Kent; but it is to be remarked that there was in that county prior to Domesday a tenant who bore the name of Derine filius Sired.
(Saxon.) From Dearran or Darran, to dare, bold, daring; a name given to an old Saxon chieftain.
According to Philpot’s Villare Cantianum, the ancestor of this family was Norman de Morinis (St. Oilier in Flanders). His son was Deringus de Morinis, who lived in the reign of Henry I. Norman, son of Deringus, was Viscount of Kent, t. Stephen (Hasted), and is said to have married the daughter of William de Ypres of Flanders, Earl of Kent, t. Stephen. This family is therefore Flemish.
