Diarmait, Old Irish Diarmuit, Diarmit, and in Adamnan the name of Columba's faithful attendant is given in Latin as Diormithis (V. C., I, 8). The true meaning of the name, however, appears to be 'unenvious' (= di(f)ormit), from format, 'envy' (Pedersen, Vergleichende Grammatik der keltischen Sprachen, v. 2, p. 62). "Dormitius filius Cerbulis, totius Scotiae regnatorum" (V C., I, c. 36), was killed by Aedh Dubh. Diarmaid, the Achilles of Celtic legend, is traditionally said to be buried in Glen Lonain, Argyllshire, the site of his grave being marked by a rude monolith, locally known as Clach Dhiamutid. It is 12 ¼ feet high with a girth of over thirteen feet. It is figured in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, LIX, p. 82.
