A contraction of De Exeter, from the city of Exeter, in Devonshire, England; anciently written Excester, from Exe, the name of the river on which it is situated, and cester, a camp or town, for the derivation of which see Chester.
Dexter is an old Leicestershire name. William Dexter held the Dutchy or Hakluyt Manor in Hallaton in the 15th century (C.). A gentle family of the name owned property in Thedingworth in the reign of Elizabeth. William Dexter lived at Worthington in the reign of Charles I.; there were families of the Dexters in Wartnaby and Abkettleby in the 17th and 18th centuries (N.).
