Deville Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
The common French Deville and De Ville = 1 Of a Ville or Town [Latin de villā] 2 belonging to Deville (Seine Inférieure) = David's Villa [Latinized De Davidvilla]
(French.) De Ville, from the village or town. Some write this name Devil!
DEVIL: This surname occurs in many languages; but the only instance of it which I recollect in England is that of the monk, Willelmus cognomento Diabolus. See English Surn. i., 223. The French De Ville, naturalized amongst us, has often been misunderstood to be the synonym of Satan, and various vowel changes have been made by the bearers of it to avoid this very objectionable notion. Hence it is commonly written Divall, Divoll, Devall, &c., while in records Devol, Devile, Deyvil, &c., are found.
DEVIL: Lower mentions a monk named Willelmus cognomento Diabolus; but he seems to think this name may be from the French De Ville, commonly written Divall, Divoll, Devall, &c., and in records Devol, Devile, Deyvil, &c. I am inclined to think the name to be the same with D'Eyville; from de Davidis villa; but see Cowell's Interpreter.
Armorially identified with Deyville (Robson). See Craven.
From the French, D’Eville; a personal name Devile and Doiville are on the Roll of Battell Abbey. Devle is in the Domesday Book.
(Dutch/Flemish), Devil. Jacob Boel, called Devil (Jacob Boel geseyd Duyvel), was Burgomaster of Amsterdam in 1421; and Jacob Boel Claas' son Devil (Jacob Boel Claesz. Duyvel), Alderman in 1470. In 1578, there were two military leaders named John and Dirk Devil (Jan and Dirk Duyvel). Burke blazons the Arms of the names Devill and Diable; but the first is simply De ville, Of the town.
