From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Gaelic Deoir, Deoireach, in documents Jore (1428), from deoradh, a pilgrim, later an official designation which afterwards became a family name. In mediaeval times the deoradh was the person who had custody of the relic of a saint. An old family of this name in Perthshire were for centuries custodians of the crozier-head of S. Fillan. After travelling to Canada this precious relic of the early Gaelic church is now preserved in the Scottish National Museum of Antiquities in Edinburgh. The name of the Skye family of Maclure, in Gaelic M'Leora or Mac a'Leoir is for fuller Mac Gille dheorodha. See also MaCindeor and Macjarrow. (2) Of territorial origin from Dewar in the parish of Heriot, Midlothian. Thomas de Deware and Pieres de Dewere of Edinburghshire rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 208,209).
