Dinan Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Ó Daghnáin Chiefly Cos. Clare and Cork. Quite distinct from Dinneen. SIF 54; Map Tip

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

Though sometimes used synonymously with Dineen in Co. Cork, Dinan is actually quite a distinct name, viz. Ó Daghnain in Irish. It belongs to Munster, particularly Counties Cork and Clare. Griffith's Valuation (1851) found it mainly in east Cork, but it appears as a principal Irish name in the west Cork barony of Carbery in the “census” of 1659,where there were 13 Dinane families, with whom were bracketed Buoige (16) and Roe (35), making a total of 64 in that barony. Such equation is unusual in that statistical document and it must be assumed that Buoige and Roe were epithetal names which were already at that date tending to supersede the original name. It was not then sufficiently numerous in any one barony of Co. Clare to be classed as a principal name; but by 1821 there were 23 forty-shilling freeholders in Tulla barony besides a considerable number in other parts of the county. In Bishop Montgomery's survey of the diocese of Raphoe (1606) O Dinan is given as the name of the erenagh family of Aghadowney, but it is evident that this is properly O'Dunan (see Doonan). Dinan is now very seldom met with its prefix O; the variant spelling Dynan is also very rare.

Ó Daghnáin Chiefly Cos. Clare and Cork. Quite distinct from Dinneen. SIF 54; Map Tip

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

A town in Brittany, whose viscounts, dating from the end of the tenth century, became ancestors of several noble houses in France, and of Foulke de Dinan, a baron by tenure under the Conqueror. His posterity were barons by. writ from 1295 to 1509. The name has been wonderfully corrupted, having gone through the following changes: Dinan, Dinant, Dynaunt, Dynham, Dymant, Deimond, Dyamond, Deyman, and Dayman.
