A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the lands of Dingwall in Ross. A charter by William, earl of Ross, 1342, is witnessed by John Yonger of Dyngvale; and between 1350—72 another charter by the same earl is witnessed by John called Yong and Thomas, his brother (OPS., II, p. 491). In 1389 William of Dyngwale appears as dean of Aberdeen and Ross (REM., p. 354). Thomas of Dyngvale, canon, is a charter witness, 1451, and in 1463 Thomas the younger of Dingvale had a grant of the lands of Usuy in the earldom of Ross with remainder to his brother, John of Dingvale and his heirs and to the better and more worthy successor of his relatives of the name, in exchange for the third part of Arkboll and the lands of Inchfure, etc. Thomas Dingwell was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1548 (NSCM., I, p. 61). Sir John Dingwall, provost of Trinity College, Edinburgh, one of the Senators of the College of Justice, in 1532, had his Edinburgh residence, Dingwall Castle, on the ground now occupied by the buildings at the junction of Waterloo Place and (old) Shakespeare Square. Some severe Latin verses on him by George Buchanan are quoted in Brunton and Haig's Senators of the College of Justice, p. 11. He is also the "Sir John Dingwell" or Dungwail whom John Knox accuses of having "according to the charitie of Kirkmen," entertained the wife, and wasted the substance of one Alexander Furrour during the latter's confinement in the Tower of London (History of the Reformation, 1790, p. 73).
