It had been suggested that the name moved from the north to the south from the 12th century onward and is a Southern Italian dialectical variant of 'Di Giorgio,' 'of Giorgio', 'son of Giorgio' (a baptismal surname associated to the father, commonplace in Medieval times.
In other cases where the I does not come before the orio it is suggested this comes from the Italian baptismal first name, Orio',(Latin for 'golden'), being 'son of Orio'.
