From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A surname of French origin from the town of Dieppe. From the massacre of St. Bartholomew, 1572, onward through the reigns of Louis XIII and XIV, French Protestants underwent violent and relentless persecution and many fled for refuge to Britain. Among them were the ancestors of the Dippies. Katharine Dippo was married in Edinburgh in 1595, and Hendre Depo in Langshaw is recorded in 1606 (RRM., I, p. 7). Robert Dippie (or Dieppe or Dippe), upholsterer and trunkmaker in Coldtoune, Edinburgh, made a marriage contract in October 1663, his will was proved in 1676, and he was buried in Greyfriars' churchyard. James Dipo died in 1695, and was buried in Earlston churchyard, and Peter Dippie of Chirnside, died in 1881 in his eighty-eighth year. See the Border magazine for 1909.
