Dishington Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
The surname of a family prominent first in Angus and afterwards in the East Neuk of Fife from the early fourteenth century to the sixteenth century. Through intermarriage the Dishingtons became connected with many prominent Scottish families. The name appears to be derived from Dissington in Northumberland, in Old English Dwing(a) -tun, the farm or tun of Dica or his sons. The name is often familiarly contracted (in pronunciation) to Distin. A couplet of a ballad of unknown date and unknown authorship runs:
"Were you e'er in Crail town,Stolen from Fore bears
Saw you there Clerk Dischington."
The first of the name recorded in Scotland appears to be Sir William de Dissingtoun who received from Robert I a charter of the lands of Balglassy in the thanedom of Abirlemenache in Angus (RMS., I, App. I, 78). William de Dyssingtoun witnessed a donation by Henry de Aynestrother to the Abbey of Dryburgh c. 1330 (Dryburgh, 252). W. de Disscyngtone witnessed a confirmation charter by David II to Ysabelle de Fyt in 1365, and as William de Dissyngton he witnessed another charter in Edinburgh in 1364 (RMS., I, 187,221). King Robert III granted to Thomas Eshington (=Dishington) a charter of the lands of Tulliwhenland (Warden, II, p. 295). Sir William Dysshyngton was a Scots hostage in England in 1427 (Bain, IV, 1005), and John of Dyshynton, Scotsman, had a safe conduct to travel in England in 1447 (ibid., IV, 1201). In 1457 Dischington of Ardross in Fife was one of the assizers in the perambulation of the merches of Easter and Wester Kinghorn, and in 1495 John Dissington of Ardrosse had license to import Scottish goods into England (Bain, IV, 1619), and Bessie Dishon was forbidden in 1512 "to set (i.e. to lease) her house, but at sight of the Baillies" of Dysart (Dysart, p. 28). A branch of the family of Dishington settled in Orkney about the end of the sixteenth century, and John Dischingtoun appears there as depute of the earl of Orkney at the Castle of Scalloway in 1602 (MCM., II, p. 145), and in 1660 Thomas Dishington was minister at St. Magnus Cathedral. Some Dishingtons also emigrated to Norway and appear there as Dessingtons. Deschentone 1542, Dischingtoun 1550, Dischinton 1567, Dischyntoun 1548, Disscyngton 1365, Dissyngton 1364, Dissyntoun 1387, Dysschingtoun 1329.
