(English) Descendant of little Dick, a pet form of Richard (rule, hard).
According to Wootton's Baronetage the family are descended from Wolstan, earl of Ellenden (now called Wilton) who married the sister of Egbert, the first monarch of all England; and there are other traditions of their immense antiquity. The name is probably not very ancient, and the heralds' Visitations only commence the pedigree with Wolstan Dixie who flourished about the time of Edw. III.
(Saxon.) Local. From the Saxon Dic, a ditch, dike, or fosse, and ea, water, or ig, an island.
1. Armorially identified with Dicey. 2. The name also appears as Disa, Disce, or Disse, being taken from Diss, Norfolk, which belonged to Richard de Lucy, Governor of Falaise t. Stephen. One of his daughters and heirs m. Richard de Ripariis or Rivers (see Rivers), and had part of Diss. Robert de Diss, mentioned (Rotulus Cancellarii) 1203, was probably their son, and ancestor of this family, for they bear the arms of Rivers, Azure, a lion rampant or, with a chief for difference; and we find the names of Disse, Disce, or Dixy from the year 1200 in Norfolk. Hence the Baronets Dixie.
From the Danish, Dich; from the Frisian, Diko or Dyko (family name, Diken), diminutive Dikje; from the Dutch, Dieke; from the German, Dicke, Dix; a personal name.
