User-submitted Reference
Of Serbian Serbian/Yugoslav origin. Primarily located on the Balkan peninsula. From what I know there are rumours that the ancestry is traceable to the Macedonia. There is reason to believe that in that time the surname might have been "Gergevich", and was later Serbianised upon later arrival. Before that, there is further reason to suggest that the lineage is Aromanian, a Latin people that in old Ottoman times used to dot the peninsula in mainly small Urban centres. My father once suggested that previous generations might come from the Albanian town of Voskopolje/Moscopolje, to Macedonia sometime around the late 18th century.
The surname was given to descendants of a man named Djordje, which is the Serbian equivilant of George.
