Djordjic Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Mostly prevalent in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia, but not common like Djordjevic (Đorđević) in Serbia. This surname dates back to 13th century Dubrovnik and Montenegro. A famous poet in Dubrovnik, Ignjat Djordjic-Ignjat Đorđić (1675—1737), later known as Djurdjevic was one of best known holders of this surname. In th eSerbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina area, most surnames come from first names with the addition of ic (ić) or vic (vić) like Djordjevic from Djordje, Djurdjevic from Djuradj and so on. The Dubrovnik area had a lot of influence from Italy in its early history so the cultures mixed and names mixed, so Djordjic doesn't come from Djordje or Djuradj, but from Italian name Giorgi, that in Serbian and Croatian languages sound like Djordji. In time the -ic was added and today we have the Djordjic surname.
