Dlodlo is originally from South Africa. It was brought to current day Zimbabwe by King Mzilikazi Khumalo of the Matabele. King Mzilikazi was running away from King Shaka of the Zulu. They settled in the South Western part of present day Zimbabwe in Mthwakazi.
Known names of the forebearers are Linganisa Dlodlo and Ngogo Dlodlo. Other known names are Mgandani Dlodlo who was King Lobengula's army general. Mgandani was killed in Fort Victoria by the British settlers.
Queen Lozikeyi Dlodlo was one of King Lobengula's wives. Queen Lozikey was Ngogo's daughter. In 1893 she stepped in as de facto 'king' of the Ndebele kingdom after the disappearance of King Lobengula. In 1896 she led a war of resistance against the British settlers in an Anglo-Ndebele War know as 'The War of the Red Axe' (Impi yehloka elibomvu). Queen Lozikey and her twin brother Muthiwani Dlodlo led the Ndebele contingent in the peace negotiation with Cecil John Rhodes in what was later to be called the Great Indaba. Queen Lozikeyi died in 1919 of influenza. She is buried in Matabeleland at a place called Nkosikazi (Crown Land).
