The tradition that the first of this name in Scotland came from France in the time of Mary Queen of Scots and that the name is Scotticized from De Bois is erroneous. The surname, which is simply from Dobb, a pet form of Robert, with the diminutive suffix -ie, existed in Scotland long before the time of Queen Mary. Thomas Doby, younger, burgess of Peblis, son of Thomas Doby, elder, resigned the feu of his land in 1471 (Scots Lore, p. 51). John Dobie was pledge for Nicol Bauld in 1490 (Lanark, p. 6), and in the same year William Doby held part of the land of Weidandsid (ibid., p. 8). Sir Alexander Doby, a Pope's knight, is recorded in Perth in 1506 (Rent. Dunk., p. 197). John Doby was rector of Ancrum in 1525 (REG., 497), William Doby was witness in Dumfries in 1542 (Anderson), an annual-rent of William Doby in Peebles is recorded in 1557 (ER., XIX, p. 9), and Richerd Dobie had charter of the lands of Staniehill in 1608 (RD., p. 503). As forename: Dobi Spendluf in Peebles, 1457 (Renwick, Peebles, p. 23). Dobe 1462.
