= Dob or Dobb (q.v.) + the French diminutive suff. -el.
Cp. Doub(b)le.
Perhaps originally from the Roman personal name, Dolabella. The French have always been fond of adopting classical names, and this occurs as a surname in Normandy in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in the form of Dolbell. In 1296, however, it is found in Sussex as De Dobel, implying a local origin, and in the sixteenth century the family ranked with the gentry of that county, bearing the canting arms of a Doe between three Bella.
The same as Dobell, which is commonly pronounced Double.
From Dolabella (Lower). Hugh Dolebel of Normandy 1180, Baldwin D. 1195 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). This was probably the same as Doublel. Warin, Ralph, and Vitalis Doublel were of Normandy 1198 (Ibid.).
From the Danish, Dobel; a personal name.
The name of Doble now has its home in the Cullompton district. Dobil and Dobel were Norfolk names in the reign of Edward I. (H. R.). In the same reign De Dobel was a Sussex name, and in the 16th century the family ranked with the gentry of the county (L.).
