Another possibility is that it was transformed from a forename 'Dobó', which also meant drummer or drum maker. The surname could also be based on the name of a settlement (for example, Doba in Veszprém County), thus indicating the person's place of origin. It could also be derived from the verb 'dob' ('throw'), meaning 'thrower', 'hitter'. The most famous historical figure to bear this surname was István Dobó (c. 1502–1572), the legendary defender of Eger Castle against the Turkish attack in 1552.
