Willelmus Dodde de inuirkethi, who appears as witness in a document of end of thirteenth century (RD., p. 116), as William Dod, burgess of Inverkeithing, rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 198). Dods. (1) Perhaps local. There were lands of Doddis in the barony of Bowne, Berwickshire, 1610 (Retours, Berwick, 92); (2) from 'son of Dodd,' which see, but most probably from (1). Alexander Dodys, servant to Patrick of Dunbarre, had a safe conduct in England, 1425 (Bain, IV, 986). In 1469 there is recorded a dispensation in favor of William Doide and Eufrata, daughter of Roderic Hugonis alias Hucheson of the diocese of Caithness empowering them to marry lawfully, they being related within the forbidden degrees. William Doddis, witness in Golspetoure (Golspie tower), 1527 and 1542 (OPS., II, p. 677—678). The Doide or Dodds family were connected with the parish of Golspie until within the last hundred years. They held Golspie tower in the sixteenth century, and it is very likely that the above William Doide was a member of the family. Symon Dodis or Doddis, canon of the cathedral church of Aberdeen, 1486, is mentioned in 1489 and 1493 as also holding the rectory of Innernothy (REA., I, p. 333; II, p. 299,302). Robert of Doddys and Archie, his son, 'Englishmen,' were charged by the prior of Canonby (Canonbie, Dumfriesshire), with stealing from the lands of Canonby certain kie, oxen, shepe, and geite (goats) in 1494 (Bain, IV, p. 418). James Doddis was prior of the friars preachers, Wigtown, 1558 (ER., XXII, p. 47). James Doddis of Murecleuch, 1661 (RRM., I, p. 341). The name was early carried to France and appears there to this day.
