It is quite possible these belong to (1), but I have a strong impression that David was so styled.
Most probably from the Old English personal name Dodd, Dodda, given under several forms by Searle. Willelmus Dodde de inuirkethi, who appears as witness in a document of end of thirteenth century (RD., p. 116), as William Dod, burgess of Inverkeithing, rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 198). There was an ancient clan of this name in North Tyne.
