A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

"Dog, Dogg, Doig, the surname of several landed families in the Kilmadok district, is for Gille Dog, 'St. Cadoc's servant.'""From Doc, Dog, Dogg, Doge, Doig, now Doig, Doag, Doak, a surname which appears often on record, almost always in the neighbourhood of. places in which Cadoc was commemorated. Alexander Dog was canon of Inchmahome in Menteith in 1491, when he resigned his lands of Auchounbannow to his brother James. In 1532 James Dog of Dunrobin, in Menteith, got the lands of Severie in the parish of Kilmadok. In 1608 we find James Dog of Ballingrew, a place in Menteith.
