From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

DOLEPAIN: William Dolopen was one of the witnesses to a deed of the time of Richard, bishop of St. Andrews (1163—68) (RPSA., p. 319). Willelmus dolepenne witnessed a grant by Bernard filius Brien to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1165—71 (Kelso, 214), and c. 1168, as Willelmus de Olepene, he appears again as a charter witness (Cambus., 52). Gilbertus Dolepene witnessed charters concerning the lands of the churches of Garviach, etc., by Earl David, brother of William the Lion, c. 1200—14 (LAC., p. 10; RAA,, I, p. 56). "The form Dolepain probably arises from the phonetic adhesion of the a in 'de.' It is doubtless the same witness who appears in no. XI (1195—98) as 'Gilbertus Olepain,' and in no. XII (same date) as 'Gilbertus de Holepen.' We find a "Willelmus Dolepen,' witnessing a deed of the time of Richard, bishop of St. Andrews" (LAC., p. 236).
