An old English personal name, even before the Norman Conquest. Dolfin, son of Earl Cospatric, was earl of Cumberland c, 1085. Searle records several of the name, and as Dolfinus and Dolfyn it was still a personal name in the fourteenth century. "Dalfin or Dolfin was a name so common, that, in the absence of record, conjecture must be fruitless as to the individual from whom the manorial village took its appellation" (OPS., I, p. 130). In the early part of the twelfth century the Dolfins swarmed in Cumberland "as thick as leaves on Vallambrosa.".
