In the case of the family name Dollery, it is derived from the Old English word 'dawl' or 'dowl' meaning boundary, indicating 'one who dwelled near a boundary'. It is however also possible thatDollery is a corruption of Dolley and of Norman origin, introduced into Englandduring the conquest of 1066. in this case the name indicates 'one who came from 'Ouilly' the name of five places in Calvadas, Normandy. Other variants for this surname include Dayley, Doiley and Dolley.
One of the earliest references to this name is a record of the baptism of one Dollery, son of Henry Dollery, which is registered in Bramley, Hampshire, in 1671. Alexander Dollery and Sarah Marlow were married in Saint Giles Church, Reading, Berkshire, in 1750 and in 1850 Alfred William Dollery was christened in Kingsclere, Hampshire.
Emigration records show an Anthony Dollery sailing to Virginia, USA in 1663, although it is possible that there may have been earlier Dollery's emigrating he is likely to be the first to cross the Atlantic.
