DOMANGART: From domhan (earlier dumno as in Donald-Dumno-vall) and gart, head = 'world head.' The Welsh form is Dyfnarth. An early Gaelic personal name several bearers of which are recorded in early Scots annals. Domangart, son of Ness, king of Scotland, died c. 506 A.D. (Early sources, I, p. 4). Domingartus or Domangartus, son of Aidan mac Gabhran, was slain in battle "in Saxonia" (i.e. in England) according to Adamnan (Vita S. Columbae, I, 9), but according to Tighernach he was slain i cath Chirchina (in the battle of Circhend) which was fought in the Mearns, c. 598. Domangart or Domaingart, son of Donald Brecc, was killed c. 673 (Early sources, I, p. 182). Domongart, "ferleginn turbruad" Turriff) appears as witness in one of the Gaelic entries in the Book of Deer, 1132 (Bk. Deer, 111, 9, 10).
