From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(Celtic) 1 the Irish Dúnán (genit. O'Dúnáin).
2 Dweller at a Little Hill or Hill- Fort [Gaelic and Irish dúnán, diminutive of dún]
Ó Dúináin Leitrim and Roscommon. SIF 55
Woulfe regards these two names (Ó Donnain and Ó Dunáin in Irish) as variants; and it is certainly a fact that their similarity has led in some cases to their synonymous use. They should, however, be treated as distinct. They are in modern times definitely associated with two widely separated areas: Donnans are mainly located in Co. Down and Doonans in Counties Roscommon and Leitrim; in neither is the prefix O retained. The fact that Maelmuire Ó Dunáin was Bishop of Meath (from 1096 to 1117) is little evidence of his family origin;but the existence of an Adam O'Dounan, who appears in a C0.
Roscommon land case in 1299, indicates that the family was there at that early date. When we consult the sixteenth century Fiants we find the name spelt O'Donayne as well as O'Donnane in Co. Leitrim, though this does no more than present an example of the inconsistency which was normal in the early anglicization of Irish surnames. The Fiants, however, record a Donnanstown in Co. Cork and an O'Donnane in the same county. As Donane also appears in the Tipperary hearth money rolls of the 1660s it would appear that the name was formerly to be found in Munster; but I have no knowledge of its origin and if it is still there it is very rare.
O'Donovan in his introduction to the “Topographical Poem” of O'Dugan and O'Heerin says the Ó Donnáin is derived from the adjective dorm (brown), but he does not mention Ó Dúnáin.
(Irish) Grandson of little Donn (brown).
