(French-Latin) Sleeper, Sluggard [French dormeur; dormir, Latin dormire, to sleep]
An English name of French origin associated with Co. Wexford since 1590. Dormer has also been used as an anglicized form of Ó Duibhdíorma-see Dermond. SIF 50
“Sleeper” in French (Dormeur).
Collins traces Lord Dormer's family no higher than the XV. cent. With the origin of the name I am unacquainted.
From Amars or Amory, near Caen. Gilbert D’Amory had grants from Robert D’Oylley in Oxford, and was a benefactor to Eynsham Abbey (Mon. i. 265). In 1129 Roger and Robert de Amar witnessed the Charter of Oseney (Mon. ii. 137). About 1180 Ralph was Lord of Ilamars, Normandy (Wiffen, Mem. House of Russell, i. 75), and 1198 Alice Daumari and Geoffry her son were of Bucks (Lipscombe). In 13th cent. Roger de A. held part of the honour of D’Oylly in Bucks from the Earl of Warwick (Testa de Neville), and the Abbot of Oseney held from him 1 fee of the honour of Doylly (Ibid.). The name frequently occurs later in Oxford and Bucks; and 1326 Sir Richard Damory of Bucks, Oxford, and Somerset, was summoned by writ as a baron. From a younger branch derived William De Aumers of Bucks 1311, 1319, and Geoffry Dormer (Daumer) of West-Wycombe, Bucks, 14th cent.; ancestor of the Earls of Carnarvon, and the Lords Dormer. From a branch in Somerset descended the Damers or Damorys Earls of Dorchester.
The Dormers were landed gentlemen in Oxfordshire in the time of Elizabeth, and the family was ennobled in 1615, Peterley House, Bucks, being in its possession in the 17th century (Napier's "Swyncombe" and Wing's "Steeple Barton"). A Leicestershire family of Dormer in the 17th century settled afterwards in Ireland (Nichols' "Leicestershire").
