Dornan Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Ó Dornáin The east Ulster form of Durnin (q.v.). SIF 60

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

It was mentioned in More Irish Families (p. 251) that Ó Duirnín, normally anglicized Durnin, had 60become Cuffe in some places (a far-fetched translation, daon meaning a fist). The fact that Dornan as well as Durnian and Durnan, are also recorded as synonymous with Durnin in Louth and east Ulster makes differentiation between Ó Duirnín and the cognate Ó Dornáin difficult. As Durnian it is perpetuated in the place-name Ballydurnian, Co. Antrim. Durnion is the more usual form in Tyrone, Fermanagh and Donegal. In the latter Durning is also found, no doubt in that case also a variant of Durnin; but Durning occurs in sixteenth and seventeenth century records as Exchequer officials, army officers etc., presumably of English origin. There is at least one seventeenth century record of the native Irish family being found outside Louth and Ulster for Farrell and Ennis O'Durnyne were landowners in the barony of Tirawley, Co. Mayo, when Stralford's inquisition was taken in 1635, but nevertheless Ulster was their homeland and we must usually consult such records as the hearth money rolls for the northern counties to find them. Dornan is the usual form in Down and Antrim today, and we meet O'Dornans with the O'Neills in Co. Antrim in the sixteenth century Fiants.

The original Gaelic form of the Irish name Dornan was O Duirnin or O Dornian, possibly derived from the word dorn, which means 'fist'.
