Dorney Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(English) belonging to Dorney = the Thorn- Tree Island or Riparian Land [Old English ðorn + i(e)g]
Woulfe makes this Cork and Tipperary name Ó Doirinne. It takes the form Durney in east Munster.
SIF 56
Dorney, a name found in modern times almost exclusively in Counties Cork and Tipperary, is associated with that part of the country for the past four centuries: O'Dorney occurs, with the normal spelling variants, a number of times in the sixteenth century Fiants relating to Co. Cork; in the next century an O'Dorney of Co. Cork was among the men outlawed for their participation in the Rising of 1641and the “census” of 1659records it among the principal Irish names in the barony of Kerrycurrihy, Co. Cork, and the name appears five times in the Tipperary hearth money rolls of the following decade; a generation later, according to Dalton, Owen O'Dorney of Clondullane, Co. Cork, was attainted as a Jacobite * and in Griffith's Valuation of 1851-3 there are 15 Dorney families in east and 19 in west Cork. In just one late Fiant of 1602 an O'Dorney is found in Co. Monaghan. It is possible that this was clerical error for O'Torney, for five families so called in the neighbouring county of Fermanagh are recorded in the “census” of 1659. Torney, as distinct from Dorney, is not found in Munster, but according to O'Curry the sept of O'Torna inhabited that part of north Kerry in which the village of Abbeydorney lies, Abbeydorney thus being called after a family of O'Torney (Ó Torna) not O'Dorney. The Four Masters write it Mainistir Ó dTorna, which corroborates the statement. As we have no traditional genealogy giving the origin of O'Dorney, the obvious inference is that O'Dorney is a later form of O'Torna. I can offer no evidence regarding the existence of the name Torney in Ulster.
*His name does not occur in the Jacobite outlawries listed in Analecta Hibernica No. 22 by Dr. J. G. Simms.
