From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
The name Dorohy is associated mainly with Kerry, particularly the Kenmare area. It is not, nor was it ever, numerous. Formerly it was found in other parts of Munster as well as Kerry e.g. (in Fiants between 1552 and 1601)in Cos. Limerick and Tipperary as O'Doroghie. At the same time and in the same source (Fiants) we find O'Dorrechy in Clare, but this is presumably Dorcy (now usual Darcy) not Dorohy.
Dorohie occurs, too, in the hearth money rolls of 1667 for Co. Tipperary. Though unconnected in origin toponymically they may be similar etymologically-Ó Dorchaidhe in Irish. Another form of the name, now obsolete, was Dorogho whichl have met in a Co. Cork deed of 1593. This suggests the Irish form Ó Dorchadha as a Variant of Ó Dorchaidhe.
Other surnames which might be confused with Dorohy are Dorothy and Dorrity both of which are found occasionally in northern Ulster.
