This surname is derived from an official title. 'the dorturer,' i.e. an attendant of the dortour, dorter, or dorture, a dormitory; the Frenchdortoir, a sleeping chamber. In the Monastical Church of Durham (1593), 'thechambre where he (the cellarer) dyd lye was in the dorter':. Heywood says: 'The tongue is assigned of wordes to be sorter:
