Rob Donn (Songs and poems, Edinburgh, 1899, p. 455) spells the name Do'll, with genitive Dho'uill. Iain Mac Dhoil mhic Huistean of the Assynt Macleods, was the murderer of John Morison, the Lewis judge (breitheamh) about the end of the sixteenth century. A family of this name, of Thuster, appear in 1650 and continue to the present time (Henderson, Caithness family history, p. 324—325). Johne Duill, brebner, in Inverness, 1606, appears in following year as Dowill (Rec. Inv., I, p. 41, 54). James Doull, elder in Wick, 1623 (Caithness), and James Doule was member of Gartly Company of Volunteers, 1798 (Will, p. 24). Sir William Patrick Andrew Doull, of the Caithness family, was chairman of the Scinde and Panjab Railway.
