(1) From Gaelic adj. dubh, 'black,' pronounced like Scots doo, 'pigeon;' (2) an Anglicizing of Maccalman, which see, (3) perhaps as a variant of Daw, diminutive of David. Ede Douw held a land in 'vico boreali,' Edinburgh, 1366 (RMS., I, 261; Egidii, p. 19), and John Dowe was one of an inquest taken at Berwick-on-Tweed, 1370 (Bain, IV, 175). George Dow appears in the Home manuscripts, 1479 (Home, 13). Dow is not uncommon in Perthshire appearing there in 1497, when Robert Dow held a land in Perth (RAA., II, 382). Gillaspy Dow was bailze of Troutiones (Trottemess), 1510 (Trials, I, p. 111). Angus, son of John Dubh Macallister, is called Angus John Dowisoun in 1516 (RSS.), and Willzeme Dow is recorded in Strathdee, 1527 (Grant, 111). Donald Dow was minister of Kilmorack and of other churches, 1574, and William Dove is in Corsehillock, parish of Glass, 1716 (SCM., IV, p. 168). John Dove, landlord of the Whitefoord Arms, Mauchline, was familiarly known as 'Johnie Doo' or 'Johnie Pigeon.' Bums wrote his epitaph.

Probably a corruption of the Gaelic, Dhu, i.e. black; but don or doo, the Scottish for dove or pigeon, may be the origin. Dow, without prefix, is found in H.R. It also appears to have been a personal name, and to have given rise to Dowson, Dowse, Dowsing, and Dowsett, and also to the local name Dowsby in Lincolnshire.

British Family Names: Their Origin and Meaning (1903) by Henry Barber

Dove: as a sacred symbol, was certain to appear on a signboard. Dove was the name of the great clothier of Exeter, commemorated by Delony in his prose romance of “Tom of Reading,” circa 1590. Of this Dove the jingle ran: “Welcome to town, Tom Dove, Tom Dove, The merriest man alive; Thy company we do love, love, love: God grant thee well to thrive.”

Pigeon also is a surname; Columb as well. Columbarium became contracted to Culverhouse, a pigeonry, and thence came the surname Claverhouse.
