(English) One who came from Dover (the waters), a village in Kent.
The Kentish town.
From Douvres or Dovera, Normandy, a baronial family, of considerable eminence, which derived its name from a Scandinavian Dover, at the Conquest of Normandy, 912. Fulbert de Dover, t. William I. and Henry I., had a barony in Kent, which his descendants, the De Dovers, held till the reign of King John (Dugdale, Banks). This baronial family has been supposed to have derived its name from Dover, in Kent; but it held no office in connexion with that Castle, nor were its possessions (though held therefrom) equal to those of others holding from the same Castle. It was the elder branch of the house of De Clinton.
User-submitted Reference
This surname was first introduced to the United States in the late-1800s—early-1900s. The family immigrated from the Peloponnesian region of Greece, eventually settling in Massachusetts, New York, Michigan, and California. Any American with the surname Douveas or Doveas is blood-related. The original Greek version of the surname is currently unknown, but there is a handful of families in the Mani Peninsula of southern Greece who possess the exact surname. One of the original immigrants Americanized the surname from Douveas to the Anglican Dover in 1940. Unfortunately, the exact meaning of this surname is currently unknown to both modern Americans and Greeks alike who are in possession of this surname. Some sources suggest that the surname translates to 'judgement day', while other translations have been rather nonsensical.
