Dowan Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the old lands of Dowane (now Greenrig) in the barony of Lesmahagow. Between 1180 and 1203 Osbert, abbot of Kelso, granted to Constantine, son of Gilbert the priest of Lesmahago, the land of Dowane (Kelso, p. 77). His son was probably Adam de Dowane, who used the territorial designation. Sometime before 1240 Constantine de Dunan (an error for Duuan) witnessed a charter by Richard Berd of the land of Little Kip (parua Kype) (ibid., p. 150), and c. 1240 Daniel and Robert de Dowan and their wives were in dispute with the abbot of Kelso concerning their lands (ibid., 194). In 1294 Adam de Dowane, son of Daniel de Dowane, resigned his land of Dowane to the Abbey of Kelso for a sum of money (ibid., p. 159). Adam de Dowan of Lanarkshire, who rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 213), may be the Adam de Dowane, junior, who resigned his claim to land in Dowane in exchange for the land of Hauhtiferdale (Kelso, p. 161), and the Adam de Dowan who was juror on an inquest at Lanark in 1303 (Bain, II, 1420). Adam of Dowan, the elder, resigned his land of Grenerig in the barony of Lesmahago to the Abbey of Kelso in 1311 (Kelso, p. 163), and in 1326 John, son and heir of Adam de Duwan, junior, received the whole land of Aghtyferdale in exchange for the half of Duvan (Dowan), and in the same year he and his heirs were appointed hereditary janitors "ad portam nostram prioratus de Lesmahagw" (ibid., p. 367).
