The Downworth family of the Isle of Man, Liverpool and Irish Sea area were mariners in the 18th and 19th centures. George Downworth, b. Douglas, Isle of Man, 1833, son of Thomas George Downwith, mariner and Isabella Waterson was apprenticed as a mariner and sailed on immigrant ships from Liverpool to the New World.
Y-DNA tests of males bearing this name show the family to be descended from the Clan Colla group of Irish families and closely genetically related to the Connelly/Conley/Connolly, McCormick and McDaniel Irish families. Descendants now live on the Isle of Man, USA, Australia and the north east of England. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Downsworth/Downworth/Dunworth families are unrelated.
