From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the lands of Draffan, near Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Between 1160 and 1189 James de Draffan or Drafan appears several times as a charter witness in the chartulary of Kelso. He witnessed a grant of part of ffincurrok to Gilmagu, c 1160—80, and the charter of part of Auchynlec to Waldeus filius Boydini (Kelso, 114,115). He also witnessed a grant by Radulf de Clere to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1170, and before 1189 the confirmation by Robert of the charter of his father Robert, son of Warnbald of Kilmaurs, to the same monastery (ibid., 349,284). Charles Draffan is recorded in Westoun, parish of Douglas, 1650 (Lanark CR.), and George Draphan in Lesmahago in 1679 was released from imprisonment on signing a bond not to take up arms (RPC., 3. ser. VI, p. 296). A pension was paid to Mary Draffan in Edinburgh, 1730 (Guildry, p. 136). The surname was carried to the New World and given to Draffan farm in Hebron, Nova Scotia. Draffin 1679.
