The first of the family of this name in Scotland is said to have come from France in the eighteenth century. Laurence and John settled in Glasgow, where they bought land. Laurence lived at Bogleshole. The family is said to have been of the noble family of the comtes de Dreux, but in Notes and queries (12. ser. VI p. 37) a correspondent stated (erroneously) that that family was extinct at an early date (SN&Q, 3. ser. III, p. 214; IV, p. 132).
