Drohan Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Ó Druacháin Cos. Waterford, south Kilkenny and Wexford. SIF 58

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

This is Ó Druacháin in Irish: though never prominent it has always been well known in and near Co. Waterford. The “census” of 1659 records it as a principal Irish name in the baronies of Upperthird and Galtire in that county; similarly Griffith's Valuation tells us that there were 67 householders of the name there in 1850 and 12 in Co. Wexford a few years later; and the latest available birth registration statistics corroborate this distribution, as also do the current voters' lists. We find it in Co. Wexford in 1565 when Maurice O' Droughane, husbandman, of Ballincolane, obtained a “pardon” (see More Irish Families p. 283 for explanation of that legal term); and Daniel Drohan (generally known at the time as James Walsh) was vicar-apostolic of Ferns from 1588 to 1624. Dame Elizabeth Druhan, a native of Lady's Island, Co. Wexford, succeeded as Lady Abbess of Ypres, Kylemore, Co. Mayo, in 1940.
