Of local origin from the place of this name in southeast Perthshire. The surname is confined mainly to this part of the shire and the adjoining county of Fife. Laurence Drone "apud molendinum de Exmagirdill" was retoured heir of Laurence Drone his father, in 1617 (Retours, Fife, 270). The name is common in the Commissariot record of Dunblane from 1621 onwards. Alexander Dron, sailor in Leith, 1677 (Inquis., 6034), and Catharine Dron at Milne of Muckarsie, 1688 (Dunkeld). James Dron in Auchtermochtie, 1670 (Edin. App.).
