DROSTAN: Drostan was the name of the saint to whom the Abbey of Deer was dedicated, and the name also occurs on the St. Vigeans stone (8th century) neer Arbroath as Drosten. The name early occurs in a Christian inscription in Cornwall, Drustugni hic iocit Cunomori filius, where Drustagni is genitive of Drust-agno-s, 'sprung from Drust.' The Welsh is Drystan in legend, the Tristram of the romances (Anwyl). Drostan's Croft (Croit Mo-Chrostain for Mo-Dhrostain) lies immediately west of Balmacaan House. His relics were under the charge of a 'deoir' (see Dewar) or keeper, who had a croft at Kil St. Ninian (Croit an Deoir) which is mentioned in a rental of 1649 (Mackay, Urquhart and Glenmariston, 2. ed., p. 326,337).
