From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Of local origin from Drum in the parish of Drumoak, Aberdeenshire. John de Drum was prebendary of Butirgill, 1372, and another John de Drum was prebendary of Buthirgill in 1449 (REB., I, 20; 11,130). A horse was poinded from Edward Drum in Aberdeen, 1539 (CRA., p. 161), George Drum was trade burgess of Aberdeen, 1600 (ROA., I, p. 234), Isohel Drum appears in the parish of Strichen, 1685 (Brechin), and William Drum in Lonhead of Pitmillen, 1748 (Aberdeen CR.).

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

The family of Ó Droma (anglice Drum) were erenaghs of Kinawley, a parish which lies on both sides 58of the Cavan-Fermanagh boundary. This is the homeland of the sept: O'Drum appears as a principal Irish name in south Fermanagh in the “census” of 1659-60being also called MacDromma in the area around Enniskillen; the eighteenth century penal law records include several Fermanagh and Cavan priests of the name; and modern birth registrations indicate that it is still fairly numerous in the same part of the country. There it has sometimes been changed to Drummond. This equation is found as early as 1663 in the Derry hearth money rolls where O'Drummond is the form used; while in those of Armagh and Fermanagh we find it as O'Drum and O'Drome, and in one case in Co. Fermanagh as MacDruma.

The Drummys of Co. Cork are probably of similar origin; but it should be remembered that some early references to the name relate to Munstermen. Possibly Gregory Drome, a minor Co. Cork official in 1299, may not have been a Gael but Solamh Ó Droma, chief compiler of the Book of Ballymote, was of Corca Laoidhe. There are other examples of the name O Droma or Drummy in Munster in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century.

Supplement to Irish Families (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

Ó Droma An erenagh family of Kinawley on the Cavan-Fermanagh border, where the name has to some extent been corrupted to Drummond. A branch migrated to Co. Cork, where they are called Drummy.
