Drumgoole Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This is also spelt Dromgoole and formerly Drumgold and other variants. It is one of the small class of toponymics, in this case taking the name of a place called Dromgabhail, and the surname so formed gave rise to the place-name Dromgoolestown, near Ardee in Co. Louth. That is the county with which families of the name have been chiefly identified. The original Dromgabhail was probably in Co. Louth, as we find Robert de Drumgol going pledge for another man in a C0. Louth law case in 1299 and Robert de Dromgol coroner for the same county in 1311-13.From that on Louth records, such as the Hearth Money Rolls and the Dowdall Deeds, have many references to the name. It was to be found in adjacent counties also: for example of the four Drumgooles who were outlawed for their adhesion to the Jacobite cause in 1690 one was of Porterstown, Co. Meath, and two were of Newry.

Several of the name are worthy of individual mention, notably Dr. Edward Dromgould (c. 1635c. 1695) who was vicar-apostolic of Armagh and close friend of Blessed Oliver Plunkett; Col. John Dromgoole (1720-1781) Paris-born writer of note, the son of a Louth man; and Dr. Thomas Dromgoole (c. 1750-1826), Dublin physician and a leading supporter of Daniel O'Connell.
