Drummond Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Drymen,' Stirlingshire, N.B. This surname, although Scotch, is so familiar in England that I append Mr. Lower's statement. 'Drummond: "the noble house of Drummond" says Collins, "derived from Malcolm Beg (i.e. 'low, 'or short'), who flourished under Alexander II, and being possessed of the lands of Drymen, Stirlingshire, took that surname, which in after times varied to Drummond" (Peerage, edit. 1768, v. 77). The name is found spelt in eighteen different ways (Ulster Journal Arch. No. 20). Of these, Drumyn, Drummane, and Dromond are the principal': Patronymic Britannia Hence it is clear that the final 'd' is excrescent, as in Simmonds, &c.
The barony of Drummond was probably identical with the parish of Drymen, of which name it is but a variant, the final d being excrescent."Persons deriving their designation from the lands of Drummond are frequent witnesses in the early charters of the earls of Levenax; and the family appear to have held various lands in the earldom, as well as offices in the household of the great earls of Levenax, at an early period and until they migrated to the earldom of Stratherne" (OPS., I, p. 38). The first of the name recorded is usually said to be Malcolm, who witnessed charters by Maldouen, third earl of Levenax from 1225 to 1270. This Malcolm was chamberlain to the earl and married Ada, his daughter. Gilbert de Drummyn, chaplain to Alwyn, earl of Levenax, however, witnessed a charter by that earl, c. 1199 (Levenax, p. 12; RMP., p. 157). Malcolm de Drummond or Drumman witnessed a charter by Gillemichell Edolf c. 1270, served on an inquisition at Dumbarton in 1271, and witnessed several charters by Malcolm, fourth earl of Levenax between 1273 and 1290 (Levenax, p. 15, 16, 30, 33, etc.; RMP., p. 191). He also witnessed a charter by Thomas of Munimuske c. 1285 (HMC., 2. Rep., App., p. 166). Malcolm de Drummond or Droman is mentioned in an inhibition by the bishop of Glasgow in 1294 (RMP., p. 203), and was among the Scots prisoners taken at Dunbar in 1296 (Bain, II, 742). In 1298 he was confined in Kenilworth Castle and received 4d. a day for his maintenance (ibid., 985). Gilbert de Dromund of the county of Dumbretan rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears two triangles interlaced and S' Gilberti Droman (Bain, II, p. 203,558). John Drommed was prisoner of war in Wisbeach Castle in 1296, and in the following year he was released on condition that he shall serve the king of England in France (ibid., 178,940, and p. 242). Johannes de Drominth witnessed a charter by Robert the Steward to Thomas Simple of the lands of Cragrossy in Stratherne c. 1360 (REG., p. 275). Andrew of Dromonde witnessed a papal dispensation by the bishop of Dunblane in 1422 (Hay, p. 10), and Walter Drommwnde was deacon of Dunblane in 1498 (REA., II, p. 306). Little dependence need be placed on the alleged descent from Maurice, son of George, a younger son of Andrew, king of Hungary, who is said to have accompanied Edgar Atheling to England. (Celtic) Dweller at the Ridge [Gaelic and Irish druiman] The final -d is the common post-n intrusion.
(Scottish) One who came from the barony of Drummond or Drymen (a ridge), in Scotland.
"The noble house of Drummond," says Collins, "derived from Malcolm Beg (i.e. ' low ' or ' short '), who flourished under Alex. II., and being possessed of the lands of Drymen, co. Stirling, took that surname, which in after tunes varied to Drummond." Peerage, edit. 1768. v. 77. The name is found spelt in eighteen different ways. Ulster Journ. Arch. No. 20. Of these Drumyn, Drummane, and Dromond are the principal.
The back of the mountain-from drum, back, and monadh, the mountain. The family are descended from Maurice, the son of George, a younger son of Andreas, king of Hungary, who came to Scotland in 1066.
(Gaelic.) Local. From Druim, the back, and monadh, mountain, a name of place—the back of the mountain.
(Scotch), Druman, Ridge, Summit, High ground.
A location name in Ross, Scotland.
Drummond: according to tradition, Drummonds descend from Maurice, grandson of Andrew, King of Hungary, who, it is pretended, accompanied Edgar Etheling into Scotland, and received a grant of the lands of Drummond in Stirlingshire from Malcolm III. This is probably not true, but points to the belief that the headship of the clan was in a family of foreign origin.
