Dryden Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A writ on behalf of Philip de Dryden was issued to the sheriff of Forfar in 1296 (Bain, II, 832). In 1329 payment was made to Henricus de Driden for behalf of the soul of King Robert and in compensation for loss of multure (ER., I, p. 218,219). Thomas de Driden is mentioned in 1455 as "supprior claustralis monasterii de Abirbrothoc' (RAA., II, 104), and in 1481 Laurence Dridane held a tenement in Stirling (Cambus., 211). Johannes Dridene witnessed a lease by Alexander commendator of Inchaffray, 1521 (Inchaffray, p. xcviii). The name is local. There is Dryden near Roslin, locally pronounced Drayden.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

(English) belonging to Dryden [the second element is the Old English denu, a hollow or valley; the first may be the Old English dryge, dry, or the Old English dry, a magician, sorcerer] There is a Dryden in co. Edinburgh.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

As in the oldest records the name is spelt Dreyden, Driden, &c., it is fair to presume that it is of local origin, although the place itself is not ascertained. Mr. Arthur, however, gives quite another etymology, namely: "Welsh, drmydmn, broken NOSE (!) According to Evans, Jonreth surnamed Drwydwn, the father of Llewelyn, was the eldest son of Owain Groynedd, but was not suffered to enjoy his right on account of that blemish !" Who Jonreth was, or when he lived, Mr. Arthur does not inform us, though we cannot but regret that in a two-fold sense his nose was thus "put out of joint."

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

From the Welsh Drwydwn, broken nose. According to Evans, Jonreth, surnamed Drwydwn, the father of Llywelyn, was the eldest son of Owain Groynedd, but was not suffered to enjoy his right on account of that blemish.
