From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

DUBUCAN: EG. Dubucan, 'little black man,' later Dubhagan, = Blackie. The modern Anglicized form or the name is Dugan, which see. Dubucan filius Indrechtaig, the first recorded mormaer of Angus, died in 938 (CPS., p. 9), and Maelbrigte filius Dubican died c. 970 (ibid., p. 10). MacDubbacin, father of Donald, mormaer of Buchan, occurs in one of the Gaelic entries in the Book of Deer (II, 15, 16). 'Dufagan comes' is one of the witnesses to the foundation charter of the Abbey of Scone by Alexander I (Scon, p. 3), but Lawrie (Early charters, p. 280,285) thinks this charter is a forgery and Dufagan here "a forged name.".
