Johan Andersson emigrated to the United States at age 18 in 1881, whereupon he changed his name to John Dudero, after the settlement where he was born, Duderö. Family lore says has was required to change the name, but many genealogists insist that such changes were never required. For the location of Duderö, see.

It is an uncommon place name even in Sweden, and dates back to at least the 1500s. The last letter, ö, means island. The first part does not resemble any common modern Swedish word.
