Duguid Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Doget.' By its universal distribution (without prefix) this is manifestly a personal name. It is equally manifest that it is not one of the common diminutives in -et, as it would not be invariably so entered in the formal records below. I have no doubt it is the Domesday Thurgod, found early as Toged, now Toogood. In the same way Doget became Dogood.

Hugo Doged, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.

Johannes Doget, 1379: ibid.

John Doget, Yorkshire, Henry III-Edward I: Testa de Nevill, sive Liber Feodorum, temp. Henry III-Edward I.

Alicia Doget, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

John Doget, Oxfordshire, ibid.

John Doget, London, ibid.

John Doget, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.

William Doget, Somerset, 1 Edward III: ibid.

1557. Married — John Burchall and Katherine Doegood: St. Peter, Cornhill.

1657. — Benjamin Spooner and Agnes Doged: ibid.

Thus Dogood and Toogood are from the same parent; v. Thurgood. Since writing the above I have come across the following entries:

1651. Baptised — Ruth, d. Robert and Elizabeth Toogood: St. Thomas the Apostle (London).

1653. — Ralph, s. Robert and Elizabeth Doogood: ibid.

1577. Buried - Nicholas, sonne of John Docket: St. Peter, Cornhill, i. 12: 5.
