1. Lydgate and other old writers employ this word in its etymological sense of leader. In Capgrave's Chronicle, under the year 1381, we read: "In this yere, in the month of May, the Comones risen ageyn the King .... Her duke was Wat Tyler, a proud knave and malapert." 2. Camden makes it a nickname of Marmaduke.
Osmond le Duc, Alexander and Robert le Due, Norm., 1180-98 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); Radulphus Dux of Bucks, 1199 (Rotuli Curiae Regis). Hence the Baronets Duke. Robert D. and his father are mentioned in England (Testa, 120).
Duke was the name of an old influential Sussex family dating back to the reign of Henry VI. (D.). There are also a few of the name in Dorset. Duke is also a widely - spread name amongst the gentry of the south of England, many of the families being connected and bearing the same arms. From the Dukes of Power Hayes and Otterton, Devon, sprang the Dukes of Wiltshire, who were implicated in the rebellion of 1655, and are still represented in Wiltshire and the neighbouring counties (Burke).
