Woulfe equates Dunlea with Dunleavy. MacDuinnsléibhe, as the Gaelic form of Dunlea, must, however, be accepted with reserve as there is no record of that sept migrating from one end of the country to the other. All the numerous references to Dunlea and its synonyms I have met from 1583 up to quite modern times relate not to Ulster or north Connacht but to the south western counties of Munster.

As far back as the sixteenth century in the Fiants we find variants which elide the N and‘correspond to the modern Co. Cork synonym Dullea (sometimes written Delea): O'Du1lea (Corkbeg) occurs in those Fiants, as do Donlea and O'Donlegh: the former in the persons of Donell and Owen MacDermodie O'Donlegh, who were among a number of Cork men “pardoned” in 1586; the latter of Cloyne, Co.

Cork. There it may lead to confusion, for in the very part of the country in which those names are indigenous we meet in Cork, Cloyne and Limerick wills of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Douly and Dully, and these at first sight suggest the 'Ofl'aly name Dooly rather than Dullea. Having regard, however, to the consistency with which they appear in Munster, it would seem more likely that they originate in the O Dubhalla sept of Muskerry, Co. Cork. Possibly O'Doly, which appears in a Justiciary Roll of 1307 for Co. Cork is a very early anglicized form of Ó Dubhalla. Here are a few instances of a later date than the Co. Cork Fiants mentioned above: O'Dule is recorded in the “census”

of 1659 as a principal Irish name in Limerick city; in 1664-66 Dunlea and Dynlea are frequent in the Tipperary Hearth Money Rolls; in 1704 Father Owen Dunlea was parish priest of Kilcomin, Co. Kerry (the same I presume as Father Eugene Dunlea, parish priest of Killarney in 1725). The place called Dunlea's Hill, near Glenstal, Co. Limerick, marks the home of one branch of the family: to this belongs Father Thomas Vincent Dunlea, P.P., the founder of Boystown, New South Wales.
